Micro-organisms are invisible to bare eyes, but can be found all around us. Microbiology is one of the key branches of biology, it’s the study of microbes and how they impact other life forms and ecosystems. A set of microbes are responsible for various diseases affecting not only humans but also plants and animals, while a large proportion of microbes are beneficial and are of great importance for ecosystem services. Many microbes play an essential role in industry, where their unique properties are used for the production of food, beverages and antibiotics. Researchers have learned how to exploit microorganisms in the field of molecular biology and Immunology making an enormous contribution in industry and medicine.
National Centre for Microbial Resource (NCMR) started as Microbial Culture Collection (MCC) in 2009 at the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, has an authorization to preserve and catalogue diversity of microorganisms collected from different ecological niches from all over India and to make them available for exploitation by researchers. National Centre for Microbial Resource (NCMR) supplies authentic cultures of archaea, bacteria, fungi and plasmids to both academic institutions and industry. The centre is also actively involved in microbiology research and provide several services related to microbial identification.
The Microbe world is a blog site launched by NCMR for outreach and science communication of microbiology.
